Evening Conditions at the American Legion Bridge - Inner Loop I-495
During surveys in 1993 and 1996, a zone of severe northbound congestion was found on the inner loop of the beltway (in Maryland) approaching the I-270 western spur; the tail of this queue was typically located in the vicinity of the Clara Barton Pkwy. When surveyed in 1999, congestion typically extended all the way back across the American Legion Bridge to the vicinity of Virginia Rte 193. This graphic depicts how the level-of-service has changed along this corridor between 1993 and 1999. (Note that this degradation occured despite the widening of the western spur of I-270 between 1996 and 1999.)
