This presentation is an assembly of selected information obtained during Skycomp aerial surveys of highway traffic quality in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Region wide photo-density surveys, commissioned by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, were conducted of the freeway system in 1993, 1996 and 1999; both morning and evening peak periods of commuter travel conditions were documented. Some of the results of those surveys are included in this publication, including high-altitude photographs showing the density of vehicles approaching the Potomac River crossings, plus green-yellow-orange-red graphics showing how congestion has spread between 1993 and 1999.In the fall of 2000, the Washington Airports Task Force commissioned additional survey flights to document traffic congestion in the Dulles Airport region, with excursions north to the Point of Rocks Bridge and the Whites Ferry crossing. Additional low-level helicopter flights were conducted in December 2000 to obtain low-level still photography and video footage of traffic at the river crossings. If there are any questions about the photographs and graphics in this report, please contact Gregory Jordan at Skycomp (410-884-6900, ext. 33). The Washington Airports Task Force can be contacted at 703-572-8714; copies of the 1999 study for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments can be obtained through the Information Center, at 202-962-3213 (request publication no. 20606).
